Collaborative Research Training Scheme     New
The Collaborative Research Training Scheme provides pump-priming funds to support institutions in establishing new specialist research training for doctoral students in the arts and humanities, or enhancing existing programmes. The scheme is intended to support the provision of specialised subject– or discipline– specific research training which will enable institutions to offer such training to groups of students where it is not possible or cost-effective to provide the training for students in just one department or institution.

The Scheme is made up of three categories.

·         Student-led Initiative category (formerly the Conference category): Rolling deadline

Applications are eligible from any UK arts and humanities doctoral student for up to £2,000 towards setting up a collaborative research training activity. Any activity or programme of training is supported by this category (such as a conference, website, etc.), although the programme must be organised by and for doctoral students.

·         Specialist category: deadline 31 March 2008

Applications are eligible from departments in two or more collaborating institutions. A bid may be for up to a total of £10,000 for a period of up to two years. The funds can provide support for a range of costs, such as planning and co-ordination, publicity and marketing, and production of research training materials or specialist software.

·         National category: Deadline for expressions of interest has now passed.

Applications are eligible from institutions aiming to provide research training on a national scale up to a total of £60,000 for a period of up to two years. The funds can provide support for a range of costs, such as planning and co-ordination, publicity and marketing, and production of research training materials or specialist software.

Research Grants:

The Research Grants scheme has four possible routes:

·         a standard route

·         a route for early career researchers

·         a route for speculative research, and

·         a route for practice-led and applied research.

The first three routes are intended to support well-defined research projects enabling individual researchers to collaborate with, and bring benefits to, other individuals and organisations through the conduct of research.  They are not intended to support individual scholarship.  The Practice-Led and Applied route provides funding for research: where practice is an integral component; or where it is specifically undertaken with a view to generating outputs and outcomes with a defined application beyond the education sector; and/or where it theorises contemporary practice.

Standard route                                                                                                                Deadline 5 June 2008

The Research Grants Scheme – standard route accepts proposals with a total full economic cost of between £20,000 and £1,000,000 and lasting up to a maximum of 60 months.  The aims of the Research Grants scheme are to support well-defined research projects of the highest quality and standards that will lead to significant advances in creativity, insights, knowledge and understanding and to maximise the value of research outcomes by promoting their dissemination and, where appropriate, facilitating the knowledge transfer of those outcomes.

AHRC/DFG Funding Framework  (Standard Research Grant)                         Deadline: 5 June 2008   New

A new funding agreement between the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the AHRC aims to broaden and deepen the existing strong links between the German and UK research communities. This agreement will cover specifically those arts and humanities fields which are common to both the AHRC and the DFG (www.dfg.de) and will enable project teams of German-based and UK-based researchers to be jointly funded.  It will allow researchers to submit a single integrated proposal to one funding agency which will lead on the application and peer review process.

Early career researchers                                                                                          Deadline 5 June 2008

This route of the Research Grants scheme has been introduced to assist new researchers at the start of their careers in gaining experience of managing and leading research projects.  The aims and objectives of this route are the same as for the standard route.  Applications may be submitted for proposals with a full economic cost between £20,000 and £200,000 and for a duration of up to 60 months.

Speculative Research                                                                                                    Deadline 5 June 2008

This route of the Research Grants scheme is intended to incorporate the previous Innovations Award scheme. The broad aim of this route is to support high-quality research where the speculative, experimental or exploratory nature of the work means that results or outcomes are uncertain or cannot be guaranteed, or where a significant degree of risk is involved. Applications may be submitted for projects up to a total full economic cost of between £20,000 and £200,000 and lasting up to a maximum of 60 months. It is anticipated that the projects supported through this route will be distinct from those normally supported in the competitive environment of the Standard Route of the Research Grants scheme.

Practice-led and Applied Route                                                                                    Ongoing - no deadline

From 1 September 2006, this scheme replaced the Small Grants in the Creative and Performing Arts Scheme. It will accept research applications in all arts and humanities disciplines but only those that are intended to support research that is practice-led or applied in its approach. You are strongly advised to read Section C: Additional application criteria of the AHRC Funding Guide, which provides further details of the AHRC’s definition of practice-led and applied research. Applications may be submitted for projects up to a total full economic cost of £20,000 and lasting up to a maximum of 12 months.

Knowledge Transfer Fellowship Scheme                                                                    Deadline 15 May 2008The scheme supports a well-defined programme of KT activity founded upon existing, completed arts and humanities research. The award enables individual researchers working either on their own or as part of an academic team, to collaborate with, and bring benefits to, other organisations beyond academia or the audiences that they serve or represent. The knowledge exchange should enable the full potential of the research to be realised so that it can make a difference, in social, cultural or economic terms, to the partner organisations and for the audiences that they represent.  Awards will last between four and 36 months and provide between £5,000 and £1 million on a full economic cost basis.  Eligible costs include academic staff, travel and subsistence, equipment and other expenses.

Knowledge Catalyst Scheme

AHRC invites applications from universities for its knowledge catalyst scheme. This supports partnerships between universities and non-academic partners, such as businesses, charities, not-for-profit organisations and some publicly funded bodies. The scheme aims to:

•exploit the research base in the arts and humanities for commercial or cultural gain;

•make such activities accessible to organisations for whom the Department of Trade and Industry's Knowledge Partnership Scheme is not appropriate.

The scheme works by identifying a project that will significantly enhance the operations of the non-academic partner and by employing a recent graduate to work on the project, supported by an academic. Projects of between three and 15 months can be supported, and the AHRC will fund 60 per cent of project costs.

Research Exchange Network (REN)

The AHRC supports the development of the first uk research exchange network (REN) dedicated to supporting academics and research development staff in the exchange of research knowledge across the arts and humanities. It will enable them to share and access information more effectively and help promote research opportunities for engagement and collaboration both within and outside academia.  A dedicated Research Exchange forum is being developed online through the REN Discussion Board, where academics, research support staff and external organisations can solicit partner interest in new or existing project ideas.
